Versatility is a term you see in many advertisements for SUVs and crossovers, but it is defined by more than having lots of seats, space or towing capacity. Versatility is having the best, most adaptable combination of these things, so you can do exactly what you want, how you want, and when you want. Thanks to a collection of performance enhancements, the seven-passenger 2014 Ford Explorer, available here at Antelope Valley Ford Lincoln Mazda in Lancaster, California, sets a new benchmark for versatility in the segment.
The versatility of the 2014 Ford Explorer ($30,015) begins with its powertrain options. You can choose a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost® inline four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6. The standard V6 produces 290 hp and 255 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed SelectShift Automatic® transmission, and it returns an EPA-estimated 24 mpg highway. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost® features 240 hp and a big 270 lb/ft of torque (15 more lb/ft of torque than the standard V6). It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and returns an EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway. Delivering maximum power is the twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which comes with the six-speed SelectShift Automatic®. It cranks out a stout 365 hp and equally impressive 350 lb/ft of torque, with a 22 mpg highway fuel rating. The Ford Intelligent 4WD System with Terrain Management System™ is available with both V6 engines. Maximum towing capacity, achievable with either of the V6 engines and with both front-wheel and four-wheel drive, is 5,000 pounds.
Whether you prefer to treat the Explorer as a toy hauler, school bus, off-road runner or even high-speed commuter, its new-for-2014 solid-mounted Electronic Power-Assisted steering rack and larger brakes can handle it. Other features that are new, or are available in more models, include second-row heated seats, automatic headlamps and Adaptive Cruise Control.
The seating arrangement of the Explorer is intelligently designed and supports multiple configurations. The second-row seat splits 60/40 and the third row splits 50/50, offering flexibility for a variety of passenger- and cargo hauling needs, while the available PowerFold® third-row seat stows at the touch of a button. Aside from folding flat into the floor, the seats can also be tilted forward, leaving the storage well behind them open and increasing vertical load space. That means that the 2014 Explorer offers seating for up to seven (with a 151.7 cubic foot passenger volume), and the ability to hold up to 80.7 cubic feet of cargo.
While many SUVs offer “intelligent” 4WD systems, none in the class can rival the intelligence, versatility and usability of the Terrain Management System™ available in the Explorer. Most 4WD systems are programmed to automatically adjust power delivery between the front and rear wheels, and that’s about it. The Terrain Management System™ is different because it offers multiple driver-selectable settings that tailor powertrain components, stability and traction control systems and braking responses to the road surface and conditions. An SUV is going to behave differently on snow than it will on sand, for example, so it makes sense that the 4WD system should be programmed to behave differently, as well. A turn of the dash-mounted knob will alter shift points, traction control intervention levels and engine torque based on your choice of “Grass/Gravel/Snow,” “Sand,” “Mud/Ruts” and “Normal” modes. The Terrain Management System™ also includes Downhill Descent Control, which automatically adjusts braking and traction to get the Explorer down steep grades slowly and safely.
Of all the roles that the 2014 Ford Explorer can fill, none is more important than family protector. For this reason, the Ford Explorer comes with a huge list of standard and available safety features that includes AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ and Curve Control™; a Lane-Keeping System; inflatable second-row safety belts and the BLIS® Blind Spot Information System. Together, these systems help prevent collisions and/or reduce their severity.
The 2014 Ford Explorer takes the multi-tasking nature of an SUV and pushes it farther than ever before. With multiple engine choices, a flexible interior arrangement and some of the most advanced safety and performance technology in the industry, the Ford Explorer stands in a class of one.
Come in today and see which Ford Explorer fits you best.
